Sustainability
Why choose fabric wraps?
Every Christmas, we throw away more than 200,000 miles of wrapping paper, and at least 40 million rolls of sticky tape - and that’s just in the UK. To make matters worse, it’s not possible to recycle any wrapping paper that is textured, foiled or glittered because these embellishments tend to be made from plastic. Even recyclable wrapping paper has to be discarded if it’s covered in sticky tape.
Micro plastic pollution
We are becoming more aware of the serious problems caused by micro plastics ending up in our lakes, oceans, rivers and ground water. Glittered, textured and metallic-effect papers seem to be an innocent part of the Christmas festivities - but they cause untold damage when they get into water systems and are swallowed by birds and marine life.
Ending single use
Recycling is laudable, and of course it is preferable to recycle rather than dump precious or polluting resources in landfill. But - moving away from the ‘single use’ culture altogether is better still. When it comes to gift wrapping, the ancient Japanese tradition of furoshiki is the perfect answer to our throwaway habits. Cotton fabric wrapping cloths can be used again and again - and when they finally come to the end of their useful life, they are biodegradable.
Organic cotton
Production of any item carries a carbon footprint - but in terms of textiles, going for responsibly sourced organic cotton is one of the greener choices. Regular cotton has a hugely detrimental environmental impact. Organic cotton, on the other hand, produces far fewer greenhouse gas emissions and uses significantly less water. As with any eco-friendly product, it’s always worth checking that the provenance of organic cotton is genuine - something we do with any organic cotton materials we use for our products.
Packaging
We have a plastic free policy. All our packaging is made from 100% recycled card and paper, and it’s also 100% recyclable. For larger orders, we endeavour to re-use boxes that we ourselves have received through the post.
We are aware of the irony of mailing our fabric wraps in paper-based packaging - but mailing companies restrict the packaging materials that can be used. However, our packaging is strong and it is our hope that it will be re-used many times before it reaches the point where it has to be recycled. Once it can no longer be recycled, it is biodegradable.
Re-hemming service
Nothing lasts forever. If your wrap is getting a bit dog eared, you can return it to us and we will re-hem it for just the cost of postage. This will, of course, very slightly reduce the size of your wrap.
